How do you know if someone is alcoholic?

  • I might be just paranoid but I have a feeling my mom is alcoholic... I am not talking about a crazy lady who gets drunk every night or anything like that. But I always catch her with a wine glass in her hand and she is trying really hard to hide it. I came down stairs two nights ago and she had a wine glass and bottle in her hand and put it down and started to pretend to do dishes. I always turn the other cheek but I am really worried about her It seems every time she gets stressed she drinks. There are loads of wine bottles hidden throughout the house and we have a wine cellar but it looks like she doesnt touch it. Am I crazy or could she be alcoholic? What are some other signs of someone being alcoholic?

    The fact that she tries to hide it from you shows that she feels guilty and could very well be an alcoholic. How frequent is this? If you're seeing this happen 3 or more time a week, she could have a problem. And she's doing this alone, correct? That is usually another sign. Some people drink socially with others but when it's done alone, problems often arise. You are definitely not crazy.

If the wine she is drinking is either Night Train, Thunderbird, or MD 20/20 then yes, she is an alcoholic.

well everyone has differnt feelings towards what u call an alcoholic ...its perfectly ok to take pills from a doc when your stressed but its looked down apon if you have a drink or two.......also its not like shes pounding down anything hard...and if shes not drunk all the time i cant see how she is an alcoholic maybe she just doesnt want you to get the idea that since she drinks its ok for you to ( if ur underage) its also fine if somone drinks alone to... agin different feelings torwards things like its ok for a old man to sit on his porch and chew and spit into a spitoon but does that make him an addict.. or someone smokes a pipe and reads a story ? agin different feelings .. i think u should start to worry when shes ALLWAYS drunk and goes insane..then u have a problem but for an adult to have a drink is no sure sign of anything but a something adults can do..
