Which kind of red wine has the most antioxidants?
-
I normally have a glass of wine or 2 after dinner these days, and I want to make the most of it. I want to find the kind with the most antioxidants in it. i also want it to be palatable, but having antioxidants is my #1 criteria. I liked Pinot Noir a LOT, it was great! i prefer that to merlot any day. Any thoughts? Oh, and I also don't want to break the bank. $20 per bottle is all I'm willing to spend.

Answer:
All red wines have antioxidants... how much for each type of grape, I don't know. However, I do know that grape juice has the same antioxidants. I've also heard that grape juice has MORE antioxidants than wine. Here is the real scoop on this wine/antioxidant thing: Phytochemicals are a certain type of nutrient. Although scientists have known about them for awhile, new discoveries are being made about them all the time. This is because there are a LOT of them! Only plants contain phytochemicals. A study a few years ago showed that there was a phytochemical found in red wine that acted as an antioxidant. Antioxidants eliminate free radical in cells. Free radicals cause cancer. But when this study was made public, they didn't tell us that it was a phytochemical found in grapes. And once these grapes are processed... say, to make wine... they lose some of their antioxidant power. And just so you know, alcohol causes ALL kinds of problems, even if you are just drinking 2 glasses a night. You are at a higher risk for stroke and heart attack. Drinking grape juice is a lot cheaper than spending $20 on a bottle of wine. Heck, even if you were to buy a juicer and start juicing organic grapes, it would still probably be cheaper than the wine and much, much more healthy. If you buy a juicer and start juicing different vegetables and fruits every day, you'll REALLY load up on all those healthful phytochemicals. Grow a garden. Fresh, just picked vegetables have even more antioxidants than the vegetables you buy at the store. They lose their phytochemicals during the time they are shipped and the time spent sitting on the store shelves. Edit: I disagree with you. The risks of wine drinking outweigh the benefits (in my opinion).

Red wine, not white, and it has to do with the skin in dark grapes. I have also read that grape juice has more antioxidants, it has to due with less processing, and grape juice isn't aged. Red wine, and grape juice contain a strong antioxidant called poly-phenolic flavonoids. Oddly enough it is also found in dark chocolate. In the wine, and the juice it comes from the skin of the grapes. If you want to skip the alcohol part of the whole thing, there are many fruits and deep green veggies that also contain flavonoids. It's also on the edge of being called the cure for cancer, but they will make it into a overpriced pill before they will spit those words out. It keeps the fluids in your body more alkaline (good) as opposed to acidic, which invites cancer cells to grow. Bottom line, don't believe what you hear and see on tv, or read in the papers, do your own research and make your own assessments because those other sources only tell you what they want you to know. I hope this answers some questions and beyond for you. God Bless
