Woolworths Liquor, Dan Murphy and BWS's ID for Under 25 year policy?

Woolworths Limited, who own Woolworths Liquor, Dan Murphy and BWS, decided about 6 months ago to encourage their staff in their liquor stores to check ID of anyone who looks under 25, and if they don't have ID to refuse service. This apparently is so they are certain your over 18. What do you think about this?

Seems like an intelligent way to avoid getting sued for selling alcohol to someone under-age, doesn't it? They are not OBLIGED to sell to anybody, so long as they show no obvious pattern of discrimination against potential customers of a protected class...
