Red wine - why does it give me a headache?
-
Even just one small glass of red wine will give me a pounding headache. And it doesn't make a difference whether or not I eat food with the red wine - I still always get a headache. Does this have anything to do with my blood type? It affects some of the people I know the same way, yet other people I know get no headache at all. I am not allergic to grapes either. Does anyone know why this happens?

Answer:
"Choose your booze with care. There are poisons besides alcohol itself that contribute to a brutal hangover. Nasty chemicals called congeners occur naturally in all fermented drinks. The general rule is that darker drinks, such as red wine, bourbon, scotch, and brandy have more congeners than lighter drinks like white wine, vodka, and gin. But you should also keep in mind that whatever your drink's color, the cheaper it is, the more poison will be in it. So avoid the cheap sauce." >>>>>> "One further note: red wine contains an extra hangover-inducing poison all of its own called tyramine. So be especially careful with cheap red wine."

I don't know the reason but sometimes wine coolers give me a headache too.
Life is great!
It might be the sulfites it contains. Here is an article:

The most obvious answer is that it is the alcohol. You don't mention if you drink other alcohols, but if you do and don't suffer with white wines then the difference is in what is in red wine and not white. And that is likely to be tannins and the extracts from grape skins. I know a couple of people who react to Pinot Noir but not other varieties, so it may be worth trying a different wine.

it may be the sulfates that occur naturally in the aging of red wine. You may have an allergy to them.

I saw a consumer show years ago that answered this very question! They explained that the producers or the importers, can't remember which, often add some seriously nasty stuff to red wine to make it keep it's looks, flavour and bouquet longer ... preservatives, anti-this&that's ... and these are causing reactions in most people - i.e. poisoning them - and giving them that nasty headache.
i think it might be the tannins from the pressing of the grape skins. That's why the darker/deeper the red wine the more chance of getting a headache. Notice that whites never do that to you? Tannins are more predominate in red grapes

Some believe the etiology of the headaches to be tannins, the compounds in wine that come from the skin and seeds. I find I do not get a headache from white wines.
