Many of the recommendations here are good. But I think what you need is a "reconnaissance mission." You say "a new Indian restaurant that opened up" so I will assume that you live in a traditionally "non-Indian" country, most likely the restaurant will make most of the dishes "mild" and add chili after for those who want it "hot." You need to go in before your date and ask to talk to the owner/manager. Explain your lack of knowlege and your inexperience with hot spices. He or she will take the time (if they are any good at all) and explain even give you suggestions as to what and how to order. You can even plan the complete meal according to taste, budget etc., before you even arrive with your date! I have never found a people more helpful and more willing to assist you in learning about their food than the people from the Indian subcontinent. When I was learning to cook Indian food many years ago I was actually invited to the homes of Indian food shop owners to try various dishes, and I was literally showered with free recipes and tips on making curries, dahls, lassi, biryani, tandoori, breads etc. I still count today as some of my closest friends, the owners of Indian restaurants in Canada and the UK. (That I now live in a country with almost NO Indian community is a big hole in my life!) (If you are just starting out with Indian and especially as on a date you don't want to screw anything up, you should just order everything "mild." There are a dozen or more spices in each dish and only one (chili) is hot so you should get to appreciate the taste first before you take a change of setting yourself on fire! If your date complains that it isn't hot enough, you just appologise and explain that next time you will order it more spicy, and you already have a next date....) Listen GOOD LUCK - Indian food is an adventure that you will probably come to enjoy the rest of your life, once you get started! And Good Luck with, you know, the other thing too......

Does your date know anything about indian food? If so, ask her. If she does't, you can both ask the waiter. Korma, tandori and tikka are all safe. rice is no problem, peshwari nan to go with it is good. enjoy your date.

Chicken tikka masala is very tasty and not at all spicy. With saffron rice and naan bread it's a delicious Indian meal that won't melt the enamel on your teeth!

Check one before you go, Is it south indian or north indian....cause most all the above recomendations are for north indian food....It might be whole different ball game.

Indian food can be crazy spicy if you like it that way. The menus almost always describe what's in the dish. Any thing that says "malai, or makhani" usually has cream in it and this cuts down on the heat. Tandoori meats are well seasoned and rarely have a lot of heat. So tandoori chicken or lamb is a good meat choice. Be forthcoming. Ask the waiter or your date what they would recommend and tell your waiter that you prefer your food mild. It'll be fine and it'll be fun! Don't forget to tell us how it went and what you had.

I would go with the curry chicken, not too hot but very spicy, not much heat but lots of flavor.

Go with the chicken tikka masala or some tandoori chicken if it's your first time, and some garlic naan bread on the side. (basically what Richard said), Korma is also a good choice.

try out any naan or roomali roti with dal makhni, followed by a chef's speciality rice--something like the corriander rice or curry leaves rice-------u can even try out biryani--but it will b 2 much

Vegetable or chicken biryani is not hot but very flavorful. Saffron flavors the rice. Very good.

Try the Butter Chicken with Nan bread. It`s not really spicy and it`s delicious.
