What is the food hygiene certificate scheme?

  • For my home economics homework i have to find out about the food hygiene certificate scheme in England. What is it? How is it marked? Who does it apply to?

  • Answer:

There is no legal requirement to obtain a qualification or receive formal training in food hygiene. There is an obligation on an employer to make sure employees are adequately trained and supervised. A food hygiene certificate applies to everyone who works in the food and drink industry. There are various levels but the basic certificate now known as Level 2 is the entry level. This certificate if held by everyone working in a food and drink establishment will prove that the employer has satisfied his obligations under due diligence with regards to training. It is a short course(can be taken online) from a City and Guilds Accredited establishment. The Fundamentals of hygiene are taught, how to handle and store food, cleanliness and personal hygiene. Then follows a short test of 20 multiple choice questions. The required pass mark is %70 There are further levels relating to the type of employment in the food and drink industry such as food processors and further courses which can lead to employment in areas concerning Hygiene such as an Environmental Health Officer.
