Re drinking water - is filtered rain water safe to drink?
-
We have had unprecedented amounts of rain here in Gloucester, England resulting in the worst flooding in living memory. Now the news is reporting that our water supply has been contaminated and they will need to shut down the purification plant later today. Therefore everyone here is panic buying water and being restricted as to how much they can buy. We have two huge holding tanks of rain water and I wondered if anyone knows whether these would be safe to drink if I first boiled the water, then passed it through a brita filter. I know this seems an excessive response but people here are just making the situation worse by filling up baths, sinks and every available pot, jug and jar and thus making the situation much worse as we will run out of water quicker as a result. I'm quite happy to wash in the water from our tanks once it has been boiled but I do drink a lot of water and just wonder if it's going to be safe!

trbid 1 is talking cobblers. Boiling for 4 minutes will destroy most bugs, filtering in addition will make it taste better.

I think that you would need to follow the advice of your local water company on that one. I understand your frustration, but water that has come from the drain pipes and the butts will have algae growing on it plus contamination from the air. And it has been standing for a while. However, I have just remembered you can get water purification tablets to render water fit to drink from sports/hiking shops. I wonder if there is one near you!? I used to live in Gloucester, but that was quite some time ago, so I cannot say specifically where. Sorry I cannot be of more help. My thoughts are with you on this.

Well it seems a good adie but it would be better if you use that water to wash instead of drinking

no its not a great idea to drink it but if you insist on doing so get some water purification tablets (which are essential chlorine or iodine to kill any bacteria) and boil and cool it just before use.
