Do blown off bottle caps really cause eye injuries?
-
I was just looking at a bottle of soda water, and it says "/!\ WARNING Contents under pressure. Cap may blow off causing eye or other serious injury. Point away from face and people, especially while opening." And I'm like, "really?". Excepting champagne corks, I've never seen any kind of cap come off hard enough to hurt somebody. But from the sound of this warning, the cap could just spontaneously blast off with near lethal force at any time.

Answer:
Back in the 1960s my mother had a stockbroker who lost an eye to a champaigne cork. I think a soda cap could pop off, under just the right conditions. Not very likely though.

Yes, bottle caps can most definitely cause permanent eye injuries, if they hit someone right in the eye at close range.
