Does tea contain caffeine?

Answer:
Yes! All proper tea (from the tea plant) which includes green tea, black tea, oolong tea, Pu-erh tea, and white tea, has caffeine. The other responders who commented that tea has less caffeine than coffee are correct! Tea has a lot less caffeine than coffee. How much it has varies hugely from one individual tea to the next. I have actually researched this topic a lot and you can find a lot of information on how much caffeine is in various teas and why: http://ratetea.net/topic/caffeine-content-of-tea/21/ Some teas contain less caffeine (like decaffeinated teas, some roasted teas, or teas made from large, mature leaves on the plant) but still have some caffeine. Herbal teas, with a few exceptions, do not contain caffeine. Herbal teas include any beverage made in a tea-like manner which is not made from the tea plant. I have a page which collects the few herbal teas that contain caffeine: http://ratetea.net/topic/herbal-teas-containing-caffeine/26/ The main one is Yerba mate; guayusa, guarana, and yaupon are a few others.

Yes, all tea naturally contains caffeine, even decaffeinated. Decaffeinated does not mean caffeine free. Herbal teas are not really teas. Some might contain caffeine or other stimulants. Read the labels. Here's a link on how to decaffeinate your own tea using regular tea bags. http://www.ehow.com/how_5048652_make-tea-regular-tea-bags.html

Tea contains caffeine unless you buy a caffeine-free version. About 80% of the caffeine will be extracted from the tea leaves within 30 seconds, so if you want less caffeine, you can let it steep for that 30 seconds, then take the tea bag out and put it in a new cup of water.
