Do mercury thermometers last longer than other thermometers?

Has mercury been banned in thermometers?

  • Has mercury been banned in thermometers, including cooking thermometers? If so, when? How do you know if your thermometer has mercury? My thermometer has red in the center of a glass tube? Is it mercury? How do you safely dispose of these thermometers? Thank you!

  • Answer:

yes mercury has been banned for use in thermometers as it is toxic at room temp. No your red filled therm. is not mercury and you can safely dispose of one by taking it to your nearest hazordous waste disposal site.

They dont typically make mercury thermometers anymore, at least not for public sale in the local store. Thermometers are filled with another substance which i forget right now, but often it is alcohol or a mix of two liquids. And if it was mercury in your thermometer it would be silver, not red, in the center. Just throw away in any chemical waste container. even if you were to acidentally throw it in your trash can, it's okay since the liquid inside treated as to not cause major harm to the environment.

mercury thermometers have been banned, and if your thermometer isn't too old, that red is alcohol.
