How do I make candied yams out of the can?

Is there a good way to cook yams without sugar?! Like mashed potatoes?

  • I'm about to cook some yams for dinner but the only way I know of is to mash it with brown sugar to make it "candied'. I don't feel for anything sweet... so I'm thinking to mash it with butter like mashed potatoes. Will that taste good? Anyone have any suggestions on something simple to do with these yams? Thanks in advance.

  • Answer:

i like to bake my yams like a regular potato and serve them with butter and cinnamon sugar, its a lot less sweet than candied yams and much healthier. or you can try these nifty recipes... recipe for chille butter for baked sweet potatos: 2tbs olive oil 2 lg poblano chiles coarsely chopped 1 cup packed cilantro leaves 2 large green spring onions 3 large cloves garlic, chopped 2 green jalapeno chiles chopped 1 tsp dried oregano 1/2 cup unsalted butter 2 tsp lime juice salt and pepper heat olive oil in a pan over high heat and add the poblano chiles and saute until tender crisp (about 5 minutes) transfer the chiles to a bowl and let cool completely. combine the cilantro, onion, garlic, halapeno, oregano, salt and pepper and blend (preferably in a food processor) until finely chopped. add the butter and lime juice and process until just blended. add the pblano chiles and blend until the chiles are finely chopped. put it on your potato :) a way of making mashed sweet potatos (that is still less sweet than candied and one of my favorites): 6 small yams 4 tbsp butter 3tbsp sugar 3 tbsp light unsulfered molasses 3 tbsp bourbon (optional) salt and peper to taste 1/8 tsp allspice 1/8 tsp nutmeg bake the potatos for about 45 min at 400F... cut them lengthwise and scoop out the flesh into a large sauce pan and discard the skins. add the butter, sugar, molasses, bourbon, salt, pepper, allspice, and nutmeg. mash until smooth and rewarm over low heat stirring often for 5 minutes. the mashed potatos are awesome with fried chicken, chicken fried steak, or blackened catfish fillets

You could just bake them like baking potatoes. I'd say wrap them in aluminum foil and bake in a 400 degree oven for about an hour. With a little butter and salt they'd be great.

I bake them and eat them like baked potatoes ,so I don't know why you couldn't mash them. They will be easier to peel if you cook them first.

Yams can be used about anyway you normally cook potatoes. They're good mashed, fried, baked or even french fried.

They are great just done like a baked potato for sure. They are usually pretty sweet right now so you wouldn't have to add sugar. At this point you could mash them too. You can also cube them and toss with olive oil, salt and pepper. Bake on a cookie sheet at 400 for about 20-30 min until tender. Hope this helps. enjoy!!!

I much prefer them prepared like mashed potatoes. Boil, mash with a bit of milk and butter to taste, serve with salt and pepper. If you insist on sweetening them, mash with a little unsulphured molasses and butter. Delicious and nutricious.

I usually buy the smallest size I can find. I wash them clean but don't remove the skin. I sprinkle them with water and then put plastic wrap around them and twist it tight. I microwave them for about 3 minutes. When I take them out they (including the skin) are very soft from steaming and ready to serve whole or sliced without anything else needed. It can't get simpler or less fattening than that.

Baked yams are very good. Just wash them, slice an "x" in one side of the yam, place them in the oven and bake for 45 minutes to an hour. They are excellent with butter and cinnamon. Enjoy

Just boil them. Rinse and peel skin.
