Where would I have to go to obtain a basic food hygiene certificate?

How can we teach my flatmate to be safely hygienic with food in the kitchen?

  • She doesn't wipe down benches after she prepares food on them, she doesn't really wash her dishes properly and leaves bits of food on them (sorry Eleanor, but it's true), and doesn't cover food in the fridge. She leaves food out overnight (including meat) then thinks it'll be fine to eat the next day. She's frequently ill! I have a food safety and hygiene certificate level 2 so all this basic food prep and avoiding bacteria and basic healthy cleanliness is second nature for me, but I seriously worry about her and I'm not always there to supervise and make sure she doesn't die. Just last night she pulled some mince out of the fridge. It had been taken out of the freezer last week some time and had been sitting in the fridge, completely uncovered, for about 4 days. The top was purple and cracked, and underneath was slimy white. She cooked it anyway and couldn't understand why she was ill last night...just yesterday she also said 'eggs don't go off, do they? Not for like, months and months and months anyway?' Does anyone know of some free resources I can use to educate her?

There's quite a few links here: http://www.food.gov.uk/foodindustry/regulation/hygleg/ Personally I'd tell her to her face. It sounds gross but if she doesn't know any better (perhaps that's what she's used to in her parents house) then she needs to know.

buy some maggots from a fishing shop and leave a few in a spot where she has been eating !. She might just start to clean up then.

You're her flatmate not her mother.

In some cases it is an uphill battle and the two of you have to sit down and really thrash out the matter. If you have the paperwork for your Food Safety Cert let her read them, or enroll her into a class, and think of paying for it yourself as a 'present'. As you appear to be making and cooking your own foods and sharing facilities, try combining, you doing the cooking and her doing the dishes and a general clean up. I found that was the best way with my brother, when I lived at home with him.
