How do you cook RAW red kidney beans?

  • Can't seem to find out how to cook them from scratch. I've never cooked beans before, and haven't even tried red kidney beans before, but I'm trying to make my diet a lot healthier. I bought a container from a health food store, and want to add them to my soups, but I took a bite just to try one and ew, realized I have to cook them first. Can someone tell me step by step how to cook raw/hard red kidney beans? Thank you :)

  • Answer:

Soak for 8 hours, cook at a very slow boil for an hour or so, until they turn soft enough. Add a spoon or two of oil to aid in getting them softer. When they are soft enough, use them for whatever you want. I cook a pot almost every week because they are high in soluble fiber.

There is no need to soak them overnight. I've been cooking dry beans for years and years and never soak them. Rinse them in a colander, pick out any that don't look right. Put them in a pot, cover them with water so the water is at least 2" above the beans. Bring to a boil, reduce the heat and simmer for about 3 hours. Add boiling water if necessary, as they will soak up lots of water while they cook. Don't add salt when you are cooking them from dry state. Salt causes a chemical reaction and the centers of the beans seize and never become soft. When the beans are done, use them any way you want. Dry beans will triple in volume when cooked. It's like cooking elbow macaroni, you will have a lot more when they are done than what you started with.

well, my son in berlin makes his own hummus from dried garbanzo beans. he just soaks them overnight...doesnt cook them. so, for your red raw kidney beans, i'd soak them over night, then put them in your favorite chili recipe with canned whole tomatoes, meat, spices, etc. good luck! and thats great you are trying to eat healthier. im trying to as well, but, i cant give up ice cream!

Dried beans have to be soaked overnight or simmered for an hour. Then drain & rinse, & boil for another hour or two. Faster way is to use a pressure cooker.

when dried, you soak them overnight, or you boil them for a few minutes and let them sit for an hour, then cook with them.
