How to cook steak?

How do you cook a sirloin steak in the oven?

  • I've never cooked a steak in my life, so I need a little help. I'd say it's about a 9oz sirloin steak. I don't want anything fancy, I just want to get it medium rare. How long am I supposed to cook it? When do I flip it and how do I prepare it?

  • Answer:

Why do you want to cook it in an oven? A sirloin steak should be cooked OVER heat, preferably in a frying pan. Lightly oil the steak (NOT the pan!) then place it into a pre-heated pan and cook both sides for no more than about four minutes on each side. Leave it to "rest" for a few minutes in a warm place before serving and THEN you add your seasoning, to taste. Doing one in an oven is like boiling a MackyDee !

The oven is overkill for a 9 oz steak alone. But put it on the broiler account under the broiler. Try 2-3 minutes on each side for rare to medium.

Check out this link for pan-roasting the perfect steak from The Kitchen Geeks: http://www.thekitchengeeks.com/2012/01/how-to-pan-roast-perfect-steak.html The gist of it is this: bring the steak to room temperature before cooking (unless it's super thin). Season it generously with salt and pepper. Sear it in a hot pan for two minutes per side, then put it in the oven until it reaches 128 F, if you like medium rare. Let it sit for fifteen minutes before serving, as it will continue to cook and the time allows its juices to settle. Seriously, read the article, it's very informative, and will teach you step-by-step how to make a perfect steak. Cheers!

First make sure your steaks are room temperature and season them with salt, pepper and garlic. Set your oven to broil and let it preheat with the rack set about 6 to 8 inches from the heating element. Add steak and a little butter on a skillet or pan and cook about 9 minutes for medium well. Flip half way through cooking time.

You may prefer to prepare premium steaks, such as sirloin steaks, by grilling them. However, if the weather does not cooperate, you can still cook delicious sirloin steaks in the oven. All you need is an oven-safe skillet and a few minutes. A basic understanding of how to broil your sirloin steaks before you begin will ensure a smooth process. Step 1 Prepare your sirloin steaks by trimming off the excess fat if desired, bringing the steaks to room temperature and patting them dry with clean paper towels. Step 2 Place your oven-safe skillet on an oven rack approximately 6 inches from your oven's heating element. Close the oven door, and preheat the oven by setting it to broil. Step 3 Season your sirloin steaks while your oven and skillet are preheating. Rub the steaks with olive oil first, then sprinkle them with salt, pepper and any other steak spices you prefer. Step 4 Place the steaks in the skillet, after pulling the oven rack out for easy access, and close the oven door. Allow the steaks to sear in the skillet for 3 minutes, flip the steaks with your tongs and sear the other side for 3 minutes. Step 5 Broil the steaks at 500 degrees F until they are cooked to your desired doneness. For 1-inch sirloin steaks, this additional time is approximately 4 to 5 minutes for medium well and 2 to 3 minutes for medium. If you prefer your steaks rare, they may require no additional time in the oven beyond the initial searing time. Step 6 Remove the sirloin steaks from the oven, and allow them to rest for approximately 5 minutes before serving them. Tips and Warnings Use a meat thermometer if you are unsure whether your sirloin steaks are done to your liking. Steaks are medium-well at 150 to 160 degrees F, medium at 140 to 150 and rare at 120 to 130. Be careful not to burn yourself when adding the steaks to the hot skillet. Fat from the steaks may sizzle and spatter. Things You'll Need Sirloin steaks Clean paper towels Oven-safe skillet Tongs Hot pads Olive oil Seasonings Oven

Things You'll Need Sirloin steak Meat mallet Marinade Rub seasoning Instructions 1 Tenderize the sirloin steak. Gently use the mallet on each side of the steak to loosen the fibers of the meat. You will be able to tell that the fibers are loose when the steak appears longer in size and the fibers may appear broken on the surface of the steak. 2 Choose a marinade. Marinating the steak overnight will make your sirloin steak juicier when cooked. Select a marinade that is specifically for beef. Instead of marinating the steak with a liquid marinade, try using a rub on your steak. Rubs are available in the spice section of your grocery store, and they will lock in the steak juices before you begin cooking. Four ways to cook a sirloin steak that are popular are grilling, baking, broiling or frying. Each method consists of different techniques to ensure that the steak cooks correctly. 4 Grill sirloin steaks. Before grilling, the steak should be thawed and be at room temperature. Make sure the steak will not stick by adding oil or cooking spray to the grill. Sirloin steaks cook quickly on the grill. It is important not to turn the steaks often because they will lose their juices. Cook the steaks on each side for about 2 to 3 minutes. Check the interior of the steak to ensure the steaks are ready to eat, and remove them from the grill. 5 Bake sirloin steaks in the oven at 425 degrees Fahrenheit for 30 minutes until they are cooked to your desired taste. Baking sirloin steaks decreases the moisture available in the steaks. The oven tends to dry the meat out if you do not take the time to marinate appropriately. Bake steaks with a marinade, and add vegetables, such as onions, to help hold moisture to the steaks. Try searing the steaks in a frying pan for two minutes before baking them to ensure that the juices stay inside the steaks. 6 Broiling steaks is an alternative cooking method that people tend to ignore. Cooking steaks in the oven by broiling them will ensure they stay juicy. After marinating them, instantly place them in the oven and set the oven to broil. Place the steaks directly over the broiler in the oven and cook the steaks for 3 to 4 minutes for each side. Remove the steaks and place a piece of tented foil over them for 6 minutes before serving. 7 Frying sirloin steaks is a popular cooking method. Turn the heat on high and sear both sides of the steak. Turn the heat down on medium low and cook the steaks on each side for 3 to 4 minutes until they reach your desired taste.
