I need help with techniques for making a spherical cake?
-
Hi, I love baking and was hoping to make a globe for a science project. Is there another way to make a globe/sphere shaped cake without bowls? I'm always afraid I won't cook the center properly if inside a bowl, considering I need my cake to have at LEAST a 30 cm or 11 inches. I was thinking of baking many round/rectangular cakes and stacking them on top of each other to carve a dome shape? Of course it would be flat on the bottom however. I know how to fondant flat cakes, but would it be possible to use one big sheet of fondant for the whole cake? Does anyone have any ideas on how I could transport this cake to school? We own an old school van, but I'm just afraid of the cake falling over. How can I make it more structurally stable? Also if I were to use the stacked cake option, what kind of cake? Could I use cake mix? Or if I were forced to use round bowls, what kind of cake recipe should I use? As well as how will I know the middle is cooked without cutting it apart?

Answer:
i think using bowls would be ideal, just watch the cooking time and test them periodically. to test a cake slide a knife (paring knife or another long bladed non serrated knife) into the middle. if it comes out clean, or with crumbs on it it's baked, if it's goopy it's not. in order to stabilize a cake like that you should use bamboo skewers. ice the middle of the cake and then hold the two pieces in place by inserting a bamboo skewer downwards into the middle of your globe. another way to stabilize your globe would be to use royal icing. this is an icing that hardens as it dries to a smooth matte finish, and will ensure your globe retains its shape. this will also help you to transport your cake because the icing will be hard so that you can cushion it in a box. wrap your globe in a bath towel and put it in a box OR you can bake a flat sponge cake and place your globe onto that and then ice it all. sounds like a great project! good luck! edit: it's hard to fondant a ball unless you fondant towards the bottom it will be a bit wrinkly though so that makes the idea of baking a base for your globe a better idea. you may be able to hide the wrinkles from the fondant that way.

You have many parts to this question and I will try to address as much as possible. Making several round layers is my recommendation for you. I have carved the circle shape several times. There is a cake pan you can use (some bulk store even rent them out) but baking several layers, frost in between layers before you carve and use some sort of sport for the layers. Ex. skewers, large straws, dowels etc. This will help with the structure and transportation issues. You can use any kind of cake you want!! You may want to consider freezing the cake layers before and after craving the shape. This will help keep the cake together instead of falling apart or being to crumbly to frost. You for sure cover this cake in fondant similar to how to cover any cake in fondant. It can be tricky the fist time you try this shape but be patient I'm sure you will get it. Make sure the piece of fondant in large enough to cover the whole cake. And keep in mind for the minor tears and cracks that may happen can be covered with the rest of the cake decoration. my website has lots of enough for making cakes. http://www.megzcakes.ca This is a completely different kind of cake than what you are making but does talk about carving cakes and bases... http://www.megzcakes.ca/cake%20decorating/how-to-make-easter-bunny-cake.html Good Luck with you cake, I hope it turns our well!
