How do i start charcoal?

How long will I have to wait after lighting charcoal to start cooking?

  • Like I know it will smoke for a while if I use lighter fluid or if it is self light, but I'm not sure how long that will be. And yeah I know there are better ways to light charcoal but I'm just using lighter fluid for now :P

  • Answer:

I usually wait about 15 minutes after they're lit. You want most of the coals to be pretty white/ash colored. Some on the edges of the flames wont be, but when you spread them out, you should be able to feel plenty of heat rising up.

Stack the coals to one side in a III IIIIIII IIIIIIIIIIIII IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII… IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII… Type arrangement cover with lighter fluid light and wait untl they are all covered in a thin white layer of ash. Then you have a variable heat cooking zone. Remember for red meat start at the super hot area and sear then move it to the medium range and let it cook to prefection.

It really depends on what you are cooking, eg. u might require hotter coals for searing something fast. We usually wait anything from 15-25minutes before we put our food on, depending how many coals u have, how big your kettle/braai is, etc. Just play it by ear and estimate. Enjoy

When there is no black left and all light gray color. I stack and restack while they are heating up to insure even burning.
