Why do onions make you cry?

Do you know why onions make you cry?

  • Many people wonder why onions make a person cry. Without looking it up, do you happen to know why this happens?

  • Answer:

Yes I do actually. Onions have Sulfur in them and when you cut them a gas is released into the air that gets in your eyes. The moister in your eyes combines with the gas to make sulfuric acid. Your eyes react by tearing up to wash out the sulfuric acid to protect them. The actual chemical process is a bit more technical but that is the gist of it.

Other answers

There are gases in onions that are released when you cut them, and make their way to your eyes. Lighting a candle beside where you're cutting onions can attract the gases away from your face.

Onions make you cry because of the strong natural gasses they emit when you cut in to them.. don't actually know the term for the gas. you can search it if you want.

i know chewing gum helps you not cry

I think it's because they are too expensive... probably because of gas prices.
