Does anyone have any low-calorie healthy recipes?

Does anyone have any quick, easy (hopefuly healthy) recipes for a college student?

  • Does anyone have any quick, easy (hopefuly healthy) recipes for a college student? I'm a student and I live alone. I've been trying to eat well but a lot of the time, I find I don't have time to make dinner for myself and I get fast food or just snack (and boy how I've abused the ramen noodles), and I know it's a really unhealthy thing to do. Does anyone have any quick, easy recipes that would work for me? I know the basics, like spaghetti and macaroni and cheese, so I don't need to know how to make those. I like meats except... fish

  • Answer:

Make fried noodle or spaghetti from ramen noodles. Just drain off the broth and don't use the seasoning. Then either coat the frying pan with cooking spray and fry it lightly with vegetable and sone soy sauce or mix it with warmed up spaghetti sauce.

kashi frozen dinners are amazing. they are fairly low calorie with tons of protein and fiber. i've seen them at almost every grocery store i've been to. sometimes they're 2 for 7 dollars as opposed to the usual 4 or 5 dollars a piece. But in general... frozen dinners are INCREDIBLE. *just watch the sodium and fat content*

One thing I did when I was poor and first out on my own, is I made what I called "Tuna burrito's" It sounds gross, but I've tried them on others, and everyone likes them! Heat Tortillas on the stovetop flame, put them on a plate, then put tuna and mayo on it. Cheese if you have it. It's great! Eat lots of fruit & vegies, or you'll get unhealthy! Steam your vegetables, put cheese on them!

There are a couple of great (ie. easy recipes) cookbooks out there, not only for college students, but new brides, inexperienced cooks, guys who have never set foot in the kitchen, etc. A few of them are: The Healthy College Cookbook The Starving Student's Cookbook Cooking Outside the Pizza box: Easy Recipes for Today's College Student You can find them online or I'm guessing at any Barnes and Nobles.

Get a medium sized crock pot. In the morning, throw in a large chunk of beef, some roughly chopped vegetables, some salt, pepper, other spices as you like, and enough water to just cover everything. Turn it on, and by dinner time you should have a nice beef stew/soup that should last you a good 4 or 5 days and taste better each day.

When I was a single and living alone, I loved stir fry. You could buy a big bag of stir fry vegetables, Toshida's teriyaki sauce, and the meat (or tofu) of your choice. I also bought a rice cooker and would make jasmine rice in it (brown rice is even healthier). Stir fry & rice always tasted great, was healthy and filling..and made enough for leftovers.

Buy Texas Toast (Thick slices of bread). One jar of chicken gravy - one boneless, skinless chicken breast cooked and chopped - a box of stove top stuffing. Make stuff according to box (easy) put cooked, chopped Chicken in with gravy and heat. Lightly toast your bread. Put stuffing on sliced bread and cover with hot chicken and gravy. This is one hearty, comfort food, and cheap recipe. Everyone loves this (all ages). This should be enough for 2 people, 2 sliced each.

Now that I'm retired I get to cook what ever I want and have the time to spend all day on a meal...but there was a time... now here's what I did...I waited for something in bulk to go sale...like the big family pack's of chicken or hamburger...(if you like liver that's always cheap and that you just fry up with onions)... I'd buy those and put them in freezer bags. each bag would hold enough for one meal... okay so like what would I make? lets do a chicken breast... One breast thawed sprinkled with salt pepper and a touch of lemon pepper. place in a skillet with a table spoon of oil and on low heat cook for 45 minutes.... while that's cooking try some steamed fresh carrots and serve with a small salad... Now hamburger doesn't have to be just hamburger's you can make a one person meatloaf simply by adding gravy or a small can of spaghetti sauce poured over the top after its fried...of course you can get all fancy and wrap a burger in bacon or stuff the inside with cheese.... the real trick is to preplan your meals and watch the newspaper flyer's for the sales...don't be scared to drop 12 bucks for that big package of chicken because your going to get 8 meals out of it and it's lots cheaper than buying them one piece at a time...
