I'm 24 and finally out on my own. What is the best "starter" cookbook I can buy? I've never really cooked much
-
Title says it all. I'm not "clueless" when it comes to cooking, but I basically just have never had to cook, as I've always lived at home and/or was at college (cafeterias). It's not so much I'm clueless, but I need a "starter" cookbook I guess. I need new ideas too. Keep in mind I will only be making this for one person, myself. I don't want a ton of leftovers everynight because they will go to waste, but at the same time I want to have my vegetables, potatoes, etc. Thanks.

The one I always use and I have wore out 2 of them is the Better Homes and Gardens Cookbook. It has a red and white checkered cover. The next one I use is a Betty Crocker Cookbook.

Betty Crocker's Everything You Need To Know To Cook pretty well lives up to its name... http://www.amazon.com/Betty-Crockers-Cookbook-Everything-Today/dp/0764560794 btw...Sure you don't want leftovers when you cook? Generally you're going to need to eat lunch and dinner the next day...

My grandma always swore by Joy of Cooking. You can also use the internet to find recipes that include ingredients you like, and put together your own recipe collection. Invest in some good Tupperware-type stuff to freeze your leftovers in (labeling with contents and date). It's hard to make single serving meals, and this is nice when you just don't feel like cooking. Crock pots are nice, too!

The one with the red checker board cover - works every time. Someone gave me one, for a wedding gift and then I gave one to my daughter and then to my daughter-in-law.

You should get the Better Homes & Garden...the one with the red and white checkered cover. I have had my original one for 28 years and still use it!

go to the store and get 2 frying pans, and some bacon, sausage, balogna, spam.

Go to allrecipes.com. they have an excellent database of recipes with lots of reviews from people who have tried them. They also have a conversion option to let you change the serving size so you can make what you need.
