Positions for a student majoring in communications. Need suggestions?
-
I am 23 years old and currently a junior in Rowan University in NJ and I am majoring in communications (radio/tv/film) and my minor is in journalism. My area of interest is broadcast journalism. One day I would like to be a news anchor on CNN or on Action News on ABC (or any network). I am currently looking for a job because I'm trying to move out of my parents home by the summer of 2012. I would need to make enough money to facilitate that. I would love to get some experience now that deals with my major that would benefit me in the long run (currently on my resume are only customer service and retail jobs listed). I have a problem though: I've never written for a newspaper and I've never worked in a radio studio. I haven't even done anything in college or high school that would remotely qualify as experience. I want to know if there are places that I can apply to within my area of interest that would take a chance on someone who doesn't have a degree and has zero experience in the field. I know that sounds idiotic but the truth is you never know until you ask/try and people sometimes catch a break and find an employer who is willing to give them a shot and train them from scratch. I'm not expecting a position that pays well and I know I will most likely end up working two jobs to get by. I need the work experience for my resume; however, and I'm eager to start working within my major. I'm drawing a blank where I should start applying. Any suggestions and or names of businesses, newspapers, magazines, public television stations, etc in the New Jersey and Philadelphia area would be helpful. I don't expect anyone major to take a chance on me (I.e. The Philadelphia Inquirer) and I do realize that at best I may only end up with a non-paying internship. I'll take anything that will give me some real work experience at this point. Any suggestions on what someone like me should do?

Answer:
Unfortunately you will have to take the non-paying internship as a starter. This will be just for a few months. You are raw at the moment and you need to get inside. Start sending out letters for unpaid work so that you have a resume. At the moment you have non.
