What has a bigger fan base dubstep/electronic music or death metal?
-
I was arguing to a friend about this. He claims that death metal as in bands like, "the devil wears prada", "pierce the veil", and "i set my friends on fire" have a larger fan base than dubstep and electronic music. I almost know for a fact that more people listen to dubstep/electro than that garage but what do you guys think?

Answer:
Well first off, none of those bands listed are even remotely close to death metal. some people could consider them metal bands but I don't. Ok now. I would argue that metal in general has a larger fan base. My reasoning behind this is that metal has been around since the 60's and 70's. It exploded as the most popular form of music on earth during the 80's and 90's. since then, metal has drastically lost popularity, but it is still strong. The only reason it may not seem so is that pop is now the most popular genre and so thats what the media focuses on. Electronic has been around for while, but dubstep is a very new genre. in comparison, both genres are not nearly as old as metal. Second, it depends on your region. while pop and other forms of music huge around most of the world, there are still regions in which the most popular music is still metal. It may appear that a certain style of music is all anyone listens to simply because thats what your region is big on. Third, like I said dubstep is fairly recent, so it hasn't had a chance to evolve into newer sub-genres. Metal on the other hand has more sub-genres than any other form of music available. for this reason, metal is able to transcend a LOT of different cultures and sub-cultures. This list doesn't even scratch the surface but here is an example of what im talking about: Black metal death metal pagan/folk metal nu metal industrial metal heavy metal speed metal doom metal thrash metal groove metal over all I would argue that metal has the bigger fan base. I could be wrong, but simply by these comparisons it makes it tough to say dubstep/electronic is bigger. Will dubstep end up bigger? its very possible. Im not trying to say that metal is better or that dubstep sucks. I believe that everyone should listen to the music that fits them best, so I would ask you not to call metal garbage. Its simply not your style of music and making statements like this is nothing more than uneducated biased opinions. I personally cant stand dubstep, but I listen to it quite often and have been to some shows simply because my best friend loves it. Here is a video of bloodbath (this band is death metal by the way.) live at wacken festival. I dont care if you like the song or not, but pay attention to the vastness of the crowd. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hGPvsKzrRi8 I can fully understand seeing crowds this big or bigger at a dubstep or electronic show as well. This is more to show you that metal is VERY popular still.
