Unsigned bands and musicians in the music world?

I'm new to the world of awesome music, any good bands out there you want to recommend?

I've finally been given freedom of music (Meaning i have been trapped in the world of hymns and piano music my entire life.) I want to be able to crank something up and just rock out you know? you can't exactly do that to Taylor swift....I like country music, but i really want to get into the rock and metal bands and especially alternative. thanks in advance.
