Trumpet mouthpiece help?

Trumpet mouthpiece help?

  • iv been playing trumpet for bout 7 years now, and i know my instrument from the inside out. for some reason; lately iv been feeling held back by my schilke 14a4a and iv tried other mouthpieces and the same story is with it. i also play on a mellophone mouthpiece, and on that i don't feel held back but i feel unsupported. iv figured out that its the back-bore of my schilke i don't like. is there anyway i could get the rim of my schilke just a bigger back-bore? and i don't want to customize unless i hav too, because it cost so much. if i do what is the closest comparison to the cup and rim diameter to of a bob reeves mouthpiece and a schilke.

  • Answer:

If you're at the stage where you're experimenting with different backbores and such, I think you should consider modular mouthpieces (Warburton for example). Yes... they're expensive, but you'd have to custom order a Schilke 14A4c, which is also quite expensive. And if you don't like your custom order, you'll be stuck with it (...though ebay might help you recoup some of the money spent). If you go to a good store that stocks Warburton bits and pieces, often times they'll let you find a similar cup and play around with a variety of backbores. In the end, you'll likely save at least a lot of time.
