  What you see on magazines are high quality photographs taken by professionals only to be edited later on by even more professionals. What most pros use is Adobe Photoshop and its latest version is CS3 and that might not even be enough. Photographs have their own techniques and they are very careful with the lighting and the focus and the framing and they buy some very expensive lenses for their cameras which really make the photos look incredibly clear. And editors have their own personal plugins on photoshop, which offer them more tools to work with than the tools than shipped with photoshop which might be limited for some. I work with photoshop and it's pretty easy to use once you get the hang of it but like i said, there are many elements that contribute to making those photos the way you see them.
