What do you study in senior high school?

What subjects should I study in the senior years of high school if I want to write for a magazine???

  • Ever since I was little I've always wanted to become a writer for a magazine like 'Girlfriend'/'Seventeen' or a newspaper (something like that). I'm in Year 10 and I need to select my subjects for next year. What level of English do I need to do (standard, advanced, extension 1 or extension 2) and what other subjects should I do (for example, information technology). Also, what degree should I study in uni (is it Bachelor of Arts - Media and Communication OR Journalism?) Here are most of the subjects offered at my school - which should I do to become a writer (or maybe a designer) for a magazine (or, if not, maybe a writer for a small newspaper)? -Ancient/modern history -Science (biology, physics, chemistry, or earth and environmental science) -Community and Family Studies -Drama -Business studies -Economics -Geography -Information Technology -Legal studies -Society and Culture -Textiles and Design -Visual Arts Thanks, and please don't be rude :)

  • Answer:

obviously english will be very helpful, though i can't say what level you should do, a level that you can cope with but one that challenges you at the same time. I would ditch the science subjects. when you apply to college it is important to have a range of different subjects but if you are going down a 'literary' path you won't need them. I think society and culture would be a good course to do, and visual arts if you are thinking of design. If you decide to do journalism/media in college you will learn about media law when you are there so i wouldn't worry about legal studies too much right now unless it covers media law. Geography or economics would be good 'well rounded' subjects to take as they are academic and if you get good grades will show colleges that you are a hard worker. Stick to your strengths. what subjects will give you the best grades? Journalism as a degree is quite restricting. You have to be 100% sure thats what you want cause you don't want to be stuck with a degree that you can't do anything with when you graduate (unlike if you did a english degree) However, You will be totally prepared for a media life after taking that course so if you know that what you want to do - go for it!
