What happens if you don't pay for a magazine subscription?

  • I filled an entry form out online for a teen magazine (that I am not interested in subscribing to) and they sent me 2 issues. I then got a bill and a "thanks for subscribing" letter but I didn't pay. I have gotten a letter from them every month for about 5 months now and the last one has been the most threatening, demanding my delinquent payment to their credit department. It also says it's my "last chance to clear my account directly with them." I have not given them any info except my address which is now different because I have moved since I entered the online contest! Should I be worried about anything or will they just stop sending me this junk?

    I think since you moved it should stop. And i doubt they're gonna keep haggling you about it. If they do, and they do find out your new address, I would say call them and tell them that you never thought that filling out the entry form for a contest, meant that you had to subscribe and pay for the magazine. But i'm sure that everything will be fine.

They will probably stop sending them eventually. But even if they don't have your social security number *now*, they can mess up your credit rating - it's not usually worth their while, though. In the future, make sure you read the fine print when you sign up for "free" stuff or enter contests. If there's a magazine involved, they'll typically offer a free copy or two, but you have to send back the invoice saying "please cancel". On contests, they might be giving your info to timeshare sales people or gyms - that is, the contest is just a gimmick to get your address and barrage you with sales junk.

how about you pay for them

It wont go on your credit report. They don't have your social sercurity number. I have had many magazines subscriptions over the years that I never paid for and nothing happened.
