Is there any way to read magazines online?

Magazine Help: Seventeen vs. Others + How to Convince My Parents to Let Me Read It... Please Answer!?

  • Hi, so I'm in seventh grade, and I'm a little bit lost when it comes to magazines. I'd like to have a subscription to a magazine. This is like a multi-part question, so it would be fabulous if you could answer to all my questions, but if not, please tell me your best advice about any parts of this question that you know about! a) Could you please tell me your opinions about these magazines 1) Seventeen 2) Teen Vogue 3) Girls' Life 4) M 5) Tiger Beat 6) Something else you like...? Which magazine has the best combination of fashion/advice/stories/celebrity stuff/quizzes? You know, the one that covers all of the bases. And which is your favorite? b) I have an older sister who's less girly than me, and barely read magazines (maybe bought one from the store like once or twice a year). This automatically makes me seem way more girly than I already am, so it may be hard for my parents to allow me to read these magazines. (Money's not a problem, I would pay for it myself.) It's just that my sister and I are so different, I'm afraid that they will think that I'm some fashion-obsessed, brainless, boy-crazy girl. I do care about grades and I do sports, I just want a little magazine to have that girly flare. So do you have any tips or tricks on how to ask my parents if I can get a subscription to one of the magazines? c) Extra info: I've read a couple of Seventeens at the doctors/dentists and such, but that's really it. I did enjoy that magazine, I'm just wondering if there's a better one out there. So thank you sooo much if you take your time to drop me a response, I can use all the advice I can get! And if you're going to leave negative feedback, please don't make it too extreme, that just ruins the vibe. ;) Thanks everyone, it means a lot!

  • Answer:

    1) Seventeen: This magazine has a great fashion and beauty section where they talk about clothes, make up and sometimes hairstyles and things like that. This is in the first part of the magazine. The next part of the magazine is the health section. It starts with food tips and exercise plans. The next part of the health section is usually a sex Q&A or things related to relationships that people dont talk to there parents about. Then there is the love section. Things like quizzes and things like how to know if his friend like you. Then there is a real life story section. These are fun to read but dont happen to most people. Then there is the article about the cover girl and there is usually a fashion spread and 1 or 2 more articles which usually differ. This is a good magazine if you have already been dating for a while instead of just starting off. If your parents and you are comfortable with you reading about all these things then it is a good magazine. But i think it might be a little bit mature for you still. I think that when you are going to 9th grade is a good time to start. This magazine is aimed at high school girls and they do talk about college sometimes. 2) Teen Vogue: This magazine is great if you love fashion. That is really all it is. It is a very appropriate magazine. I only read it occasionally because to me the fashion is to unrealistic and expensive. There is usually only about 2-4 articles that arent related to the world beyond designer brands. This is an appropriate magazine but only interests people who really love fashion. 3) Girls' Life: Girl's life is amazing for your age. It is aimed at middle school girls and its like the younger version of seventeen. It starts with dear carol which is where people send in questions and the girls life team answers them. Then there is fashion. I think that seventeen does a much better job at fashion than girl's life but it still is not bad. Then there is the beauty section. I think this section is great. It is more for the girl who is just starting out on make up and is just beginning to experiment. Then there is a guys Q&A. Then there i an article about guys. Things like how to get him interested. Then there is a body Q&A. This is a great section. Then there is an article about life that talks about things like school. Then there is an article about the cover girl. Then there are a few pages about celebrities. Then there is a fashion shoot. Then there are many articles about school, guys, friends, positive thinking and there is usually 1 or 2 articles about serious problems like cutting, body image etc.. Then there is a fitness and health section about looking after yourself. Then there are embarrassing moments. I really think this is the greatest magazine for your age. It for the girl who is starting to grow up. 4) M and Tiger Beat: There are so many magazine like these ones. The only thing they talk about is celebrities and what's going on in there lives. It is purely a gossip magazine. I used to get these occasionally but in a 2 months none of it is relevant anymore. 6) You should try reading girlfriend magazine and dolly magazine. They are australian so you might not be able to find them. You could but an issue off ebay if you are interested. These two magazines are pretty much the same. They cover everything fashion, beauty, celebrities, boys, friends, school etc.. The thing i like about these magazines is that they have so many articles in them each month compared to american magazines. The only place they talk about sex is in a sealed section. So if your parents arent comfortable with you reading about that then you just don't open it. Ive also heard of justine magazine which i have never read but looks good. You can also tell them that these magazines arent only for extremely girly people. The magazines give advice on life and the things you go through while growing up. If they are uncomfortable with it then you can tell them that they can look through it first or that you will read it with them. It can give them an excuse to talk to you about issues that you people face in there life.

A. 1. I started reading Seventeen in 8th or 9th grade and am now going into 11th. I like it but I'll be honest with you, a lot of the stuff in it is directed for older girls. Not saying you shouldn't read it just that some of the stuff addressed in it might not appeal to you. 2. I've read it a few times. It's not my favorite but it's an alright magazine. 3. I think it's a great magazine! The stuff in it would be perfect for someone of your age, heck, even I still read it. 4. Good magazine - compared to Tiger Beat and others though, it's not my absolute favorite. I still like it though. 5. I personally think this is your best bet for fashion/advice/stories...etc. When I'm at the grocery store, I always end up getting this. 6. J-14 or Bop. Both are excellent and will also give you great fashion/advice/stories....etc. To get a better idea, I would suggest going to the magazine's websites to get a feel for what they offer. It will help make a difference in your decision. B. You could tell them when you were at a friend's house, she had this magazine and it had some really great stuff in it so you were hoping you'd be able to subscribe to it as well. If you're gonna pay for it, it shouldn't be a problem. If that doesn't work, you can take a different approach. Next time you're at the store, pick up one of the magazine's listed above, maybe flip through a few and find the one you like the best, and show it to them. Maybe after reading it, they'll see these magazines are harmless and fun. C. I think the best magazine for you would be Tiger Beat, J-14, or Bop. Whichever you end up picking will be great though!

I think being in 7th grade is a little too young for seventeen, stick with M or Tiger Beat or Girl's Life because those are geared more towards your age group, read seventeen when you're 15

A. 1. Seventeen is personally my favorite. It's aimed more for fashion trends, embarrassing stories, makeup, quizzes, etc. 2. I have read Teen Vogue before also. Mostly also about fashion, celebrity trends, etc. 3. Celebrity stories, quizzes, TV show info etc. 4. Never heard of it. 5. To me, Tiger Beat is just a gossip filled piece of trash. No offense, but I think celebrities deserve their privacy, just like you and me. Anyway, I never read it. Just a gossip magazine. B. Well, if you don't know what they are going to say, ask them if you could have a subscription to a magazine. If they say yes, tell them you can pay for it yourself and start out with the lowest month subscription. Just to see if you like it or not. You're welcome! :-)
