What classes should I take in high school to intern and work for a magazine being an editor?
-
I was thinking of working for Seventeen magazine.

Answer:
Journalism classes. Also, work on the school newspaper. English classes, especially those that help you with writing and editing skills. Consult with your high school guidance counselor and ask him/her this same question. The guidance counselor will give you more information. When you take journalism classes, ask your teachers for advice on how to get a job with a magazine. Go to college and take some more journalism classes, especially classes in magazine production and copy editing. You will need to learn about things like AP style to write for magazines. Get an AP style book and study it. You can start at a junior college and then see if you need to take more classes at a university, or not. People tend to hire journalists who have B.A. degrees and not just A.A. degrees. Consult with college guidance counselors, also, and ask their advice on how to get a job with a magazine. Do internship jobs before graduating from college to give you some good practice and also some experience to put on a resume. Also, build up a portfolio of your writings that you did in school and on internship jobs. Get letters of recommendation from your journalism teachers and internship employers to help you to get a good permanent job in the future. Try getting some "informational interviews" with magazine editors and just ask them for advice on how to get a job such as theirs.

Take plenty of writing courses. You could also get some photography and graphic design classes in there somewhere. I think it'd be a good idea to get into media of some kind at school, like the year book committee, announcements, school newsletter, etc. Get yourself out there so you have samples of your work to show when you apply for the internship.

English and Journalism. Join the school paper and put together a portfolio. Be prepared however, many magazines are looking for college students for their interns. But don't let that stop you from submitting your portfolio everywhere you can.

I would take a lot of journalism classes. But you would have to love to write. Journalism classes would help teach you to write and to keep your reader's attention (I know this might sound lame but it is true). Hope this helps *~*
