What is it like to work for a magazine?

What should I study in school to work at a fashion magazine like Elle Magazine?

  • or at any other fashion magazine.. -working in either photography, writing articles, fashion. -how can i intern

  • Answer:

From a photographer's point of view: I'm hoping this is going to work for me, it seems to be from what I've heard from people in the industry... Major in Photography at an ART school, not some technical college- here's why: art schools can teach you how to think creatively and create visually exciting and moving images- essentially what an art director does. Learning the technical side of things is easy... getting good exposure, etc. can all be found online, or at workshops. Art schools will teach you that too, but not too in depth. Companies these days are looking for one person to be photographer and art director at the same time. If you want to further your usefulness to the company, and insure you have a job, minor in advertising or graphic design... this will help you understand what the guy or girl who's getting your images has to do with them, and will help you learn about varying your shots, etc. Interning... good luck, it's unfortunately almost always about who you know. But... don't lose hope. Send your portfolio to many places, the fact that you have both advertising, or graphic design and photography means you have 3 types of job you can do.

the obvious answer would be into merchandising, design, journalism, or photography. Your biggest concern here would be where you will go to school. Shoot for a NY university. You could even just get a business degree. A lot of times it's not about what you specifically majored in, as long it's not something entirely off course, and it's all about how well you did and what internships you did. People want proven great experience more than anything. It is hard to get great internships, you just have to be exceptional and persistent and your advisor will help you.

I would say major in journalism or business. Minor is visual communications.
