  To be a publisher, you just have to put up the cash to start up a publication. To be an editor, you have to work your way up. As a former managing editor for a magazine, I can tell you it's not an easy job. I was responsible for the writing staff and freelance writers, making sure their stories were in by deadline and edited to our style, etc. Then we would meet to choose photos and decide on layout, etc. The pay varies. The bigger pubs pay a lot more.
