What is your best way to study?

What's the best way to study scriptures?

  • I have recently benn converted to a Mormon(about a year ago). I've never really gotten a chance to study the bible, but now I have all four to study( king james, book of mormon, D&C and Pearl of great price. Because I am a new member of the church I just take Gospel Principle classes so I get the chance to study the bible as much with my fellow members. I know alot of people tell me to just start where I want or from the beginning, but I would like to find out the best ways to really study and understand all four books. Any advice would help and I always remember to pray before I read I just wanted some advice.

Here are some sights which gives reading schedules that may help you. http://lds.about.com/od/bookofmormon/a/bk_bom_reading.htm http://emp.byui.edu/ANDERSONR/schedules/324schedule.htm http://www.backtothebible.org/index.php/Bible-Reading-Guides.html The bible schedule gives you some options as to which how to approach the Bible. BYU has some round table discussion which are good, butunfortunatelyy some of them are not available right now, hopefully they will return in the future. They are a great way of learning things about the gospels of the Church. Perhaps you can check in occasionally and see if they have them, most are listed under 'discussions'. http://byutv.org/programaz/program.asp?id=772

Various sources put out a schedule to direct people to read through the Bible in one year. Also have some commentaries on hand for explanation. Treat it like a school class, only of course it is spiritual as well as intellectual. There are also things on tape/CDs that can guide you and explain things. I would think the Mormon church has these resources for new converts.

After you get done with the gospel principle class you can take a glass on one of the scriptures. In Sunday School we are studying the old testament this year. My stake president challenged us to read the entire book by the end of the year. Yes i am behind them right now but am proud of my self because i have read further than i have before. I am also reading the book of Mormon in which I do everyday. There are different ways to study it is up to you. By the way congratulations on joining the church.

Read, re-read, compare to other books in the Bible, then read again. Each passage can teach you a new way to live life if you open your mind.

It takes a lifetime - there is SO much to learn. I started by reading the study guides and not really the scriptures - Old Testament, New, Book of Mormon, D&C, POGP, Church History. Now I read a verse in the book of mormon and read every single cross reference at the bottom (go through the scriptures and find the scriptures and read them) if there are any and then take notes in a notebook. A single verse takes a half hour or so usually and it really drags me back and fort through the scriptures quite thoroughly.
