What does a game designer do?

What should I study to become a Game Engine Designer?

• I want to work in the video game industry as a person who designs games but when I look up degrees in Game Design all I can find are schools for Digital Art (3d Modeling). I want to write computer programs that set the boundaries of the game world but I don't know where to even begin to start looking, which is why I am asking anyone who reads this; where do I start looking or what should I look into to become a Game Engine Designer (if it would even be called that)?
