What would be better, the IB program or a magnet?

Is the IB program really worth it? HIGH SCHOOL CHOOSING HELP!?

  • I'm in the middle of a big decision; which high school I should attend next year and I'm really confused. One of my choices is the big high school with the IB prgram and a smaller high school that still has honors but no IB. So the first high school has the IB. Which I know is really awesome and stuff. But would I waste the rest of my kid life doing the rigorous IB homework? The IB school has thousands of students. Me no likey. Now my other choice is the smaller high school. But it has no IB. And the only honors are Math and Science. And you have to take some classes at the Junior College to graduate. But it's a small high school, less pressure and stuff. And it does have a record of sending students into good college. But will I have to work harder to compete against the IB students for colleges if I go to this school? Will IB give me a huge advantage against other students. What thing can I do in high school to look well-rounded? Please, I'm desperate. Thanks! :D

Honestly, I wouldn't worry about the IB program. If the small school seems like more of a fit and it has a good record of sending kids to good colleges, I would go there. It's not that IB is a horrible program, it's just that it's played more than it should be. If you want to go to medical school, you probably want the IB school, but if it's not medical or out of the country and pressure is a big thing to you, I would pick the more comfortable, smaller school. IB isn't everything it's made out to be since American teachers can't teach exactly to the standard of IB, even though they do really try to, and taking the honors courses that are available will also give you an edge anyway. Too many people worry and worry about what to do for grades and what colleges will want, but most colleges don't really consider IB to be a tell-all of a kid's actions. To be "well-rounded" you can go to a shelter, mission, church, etc. to volunteer, and it still proves you are involved in the community. Don't sell out to something if you don't really want to do it to better yourself. That's what should matter, not how you compare to others, because as long as you do what you need to get done, it'll reflect in your applications, IB or not.

I would (and did) choose the IB programme. I'm an IB2 student and despite all the inane tasks the programme requires, it was completely worth the toil. I've applied to SUNY Geneseo and will have a full year of college paid for thanks to IB. There are several times in which you will hate IB, but it has taught me time management and how to perform academically at a higher level than most college freshman. Go for it!

I am taking IB, and it isn't as bad as I thought. There are some difficult courses, but it mostly depends on a teacher. Plus, when you complete IB, then you get almost a year and a half off of college, and I think you also get a scholarship.

I would say go to the high school with the IB program. It will give you a huge advantage when you're applying to college not to mention all the college credit you get when you're done with IB. It's really not that bad, sure there's a lot of work but there's a huge payout in the end. You'll have to work hard in college anyways and IB throughly prepares you and college will be a breeze afterwards. You'll get used to the big high school campus even if you don't like it, but you'll become more familiar with it. The smaller high school with the honors, is that AP? Because AP counts for college credit but I don't think honors does so you might have to take it again in college. And to be more well-rounded you should join clubs, especially honor societies and try to have a position like president or vice president. But stick to a couple of clubs and stay committed because colleges don't like students who are in too many. Good luck. :D
