I wanted to be a doctor but chemistry is my worst subject...?
-
Hey I'm 16 years old and a sophomore at high school. I've recently been thinking a lot about where I want to go with my life, and had been putting a lot of thought into being a doctor, because I'm really good with all the physical aspects of the body, diseases, etc. For example, if a kid was to go into cardiac arrest in front of me in school (This has actually happened to me recently) I know exactly how to handle and assess the situation. But the thing is, I am TERRIBLE at chemistry. I can't remember all the formulas and when to use them, etc. I've also put some thought into being a psychiatrist/psychologist. I just want a job with very good pay and something I can do well and enjoy.. Like being a doctor. But the thing is, according to the way my chem teacher described becoming a doctor to my class with all the chemistry courses necessary and the percentages of who drops out in which courses, I don't feel secure enough to get involved in it. I'm terrible at chemistry. Are there any similar high-paying jobs that I might have a shot at if I'm good with all of the non-chemical factors of health?

Answer:
Unfortunately, as you go to higher levels in biology, you will have to learn some chemistry. Your chemistry teacher was probably exaggerating when it comes to how much chemistry you learn. It will be much much more biology than chemistry however, and if you find a way to survive the chemistry classes you have to take, you should be fine, as it won't go too far. The only high paying jobs relating to medicine are doctors and pharmacists. A thorough understanding of all biological processes in the human body requires knowledge of the chemical processes that make them work. If you absolutely cannot stand chemistry and want to do something medical, you can become a nurse or a lawyer that specializes in dealing with medical issues. You can also work in computers, and take a job that deals with computerizing medical information systems.
