What is a dental assistant career really like?

  • I'm 19 and I'm thinking about pursuing a dental assistant career and i would like to get some feed back from people who work in this field or knows someone that does. Is the studying extremely hard ? Is it worth it ? Whats the pay like ?[in nj/ny area]-IMPORTANT Do you get allot of respect ? Do you like it ? Is it boring most of the time? Tell me about your experiences there so i can be realistic about my choices . what are some good school to attend in ny or nj for this career ?Does it matter if its a credited or non credited school ? b/c i found Mandl school in Manhattan but they said you get a certificate for it but its non-credited .

  • Answer:

All the friends I had who took that course and worked in that profession ended up hating it. The pay is around $21.00 an hour but don't expect to get too much more unless you take your dental hygiene course as well. They ended up being the dentist's "beck and call" person, doing all the "dirty work". They were bored out of their minds, regretted wasting the money on the course (which by the way is hard, you have to take anatomy and other difficult courses).
