Can I go to college and be an EMT at the same time?

Can you go to college full-time if your on unemployment?

  • My company is laying off the dept I work in. I am currently in college and would like to continue.

  • Answer:

As you didn't tell us in which state you are working, we can't give you specific information. I can, however, tell you that in most states, the answer would be no. You need to be willing and able to accept any and all full-time jobs that are offered. If you're attending college full-time, you won't be able to accept a job during normal working hours. The basic question that UI will ask is, "If you're offered a job, will you quit school and forfeit any tuition you've already paid?" Most people would answer no. ************************* Following is a quote from your state's FAQ section: " 9. Can I go to school while I draw my unemployment benefits? Arkansas Law requires that a person be able and available for work while drawing unemployment, and be willing to accept suitable work if offered. However, exemptions from work search can occur if you are attending school full-time and are enrolled in a training course that is approved by the Department Director; or if you are attending school full-time in an approved Federal program such as the Trade Act. Check with your local office to determine if you qualify for any type of exemption. If you do not qualify for work search exemption, you may still be eligible for benefits while attending school. There are several factors considered when determining if school attendance will affect a person's eligibility for Unemployment Insurance Benefits. The most important factor is availability for work. In other words, your schooling must not interfere with making your minimum number of assigned job contacts or your ability to accept work." So you're back to being willing to quit school and forfeit your tuition in order to accept a full-time job. Of course, if you only take night courses or on-line courses, you may be able to get around this problem.
