Answer:
I think all parents early on should have a plan as to what their goals are as parents. In my opinion the two best things I can provide my children is good health and a good education. It kills me when people just expect the government to provide these things for them. What greater gift can you give a kid than at 18 to have options? I homeschool but I do not recommend that all people should. It works for us. I know lots of kids who have gotten an amazing education through public schools from teachers who loved their jobs and genuinely cared about the kids. The main difference in that the parents took an active role in their upbringing and provided a lot of supervision and support. It is not a teacher’s job to educate your child. They have them for 9 months and then pass them on. You are the consistent force in their education. I personally went to private school and received an amazing education. I felt like I had to reprogram some of my beliefs after high school. I totally had a superiority complex that I was smarter then public schooled kids. What a shocker when I got to college. I think it was partially my parents influence. I see this problem with homeschool kids as well. If you shelter kids to where they are always in the same peer group, you are doing your kids a great disservice. What happens when they are competing in the job market with people who are different then them? For that reason, I keep my kids involved in lots of different social groups. I heavily monitor them so I remain the number one force in their belief system. I don’t think the question in my mind is if homeschooling is better. I have seen kids that have gotten a lousy education because their parents never should have attempted homeschooling. I think the main issue is what influence a parent is in a child’s life. We should always put what is best for the kid in front of our motives. If I can maintain a relationship with my kids that they respect me so much they will do their best not to disappoint me then I have succeeded. If my kids feel I am the one they should turn to no matter how bad of situation they are in then I have succeeded.

That'll depend on your area and the schools in your area as well as your ability to be the teacher. If you can't teach and your schools are good -- hands down public school. Personally, I'm not totally turned on by the public schools anymore. There's too much testing and it's only to see if the teachers are doing their jobs, it has nothing to do with the kids themselves. The schools by me are very good and my daughter is in public school, but if i lived somewhere else, i just don't know.

Quite frankly what you are asking is very complex. There are problems, and positives, to both. In Homeschooling, it is easier to censor the material your child studies. This is good for families of strict religious values. Homeschooling teaches children a certain amount of independence and gives them more attention. Unfortunately, the education that homeschoolers get is not necessarily well rounded, or practical. Also, young homeschoolers tend to have problems socially and do not function well in groups. Some homeschooling groups hold regular activities to socialize their children in a method to combat this problem. Homeschoolers are not subjected to the violence of public school. Those parents who homeschool their children are not necessarily qualified to teach their children, however, and children can suffer because of this. They don't learn what they will need to be competitive in college or the job market. As far as public school, the violence and overcrowding are HUGE problems. So is parent apathy. Children are allowed to go only so far in each subject because they are "held back" in order to keep classes together. Public school kids usually learn more practical things, like how to move into college or the workforce. The socialization of public school kids is superior. Homeschooling is usally chosen by parents for either, religous reasons, bad public schools in the area, or disciplinary problems of the children. The pro of Homeschool include: -Less actual time wasted in the day, the amount of school work is the same but can be accomplsihed in 3-4 hours at home vs 8 hours at public school. - Censorship of sexual related topics by parents - Censorship of religious or potlical topics parents - more bonding and discipline from the parent as teacher - Allows for more freedom of topics being taught - allows for inter-disciplanary topics and activites not available in public schools. Cons of Homeschooling - Lack of attention and distraction by child - lack of social interaction with peers - Circulum not up to standards - Parent-teacher not able to teach There are many factors about homeschooling vs Public schools, however it is an indivdual choice among the student and the parent. There is no right or wrong answer. Many Homeschooled children go on to College and are extremely successful, as well as many just can't handle the educational process. Again there are cases for either extreme and the pros - cons are really based upon indivdual preferences that include social, geographic, and religious aspects.

Home schooling for an individual student negatively impacts a students social skills. If there is a group of educated parents teaching children in small groups, socialization skills are improved over individual study. Public school educations vary from horror stories to success stories depending on the state, region, city, and school district. It is almost a Catch 22 situation. Some schools and school systems are not accountable. If you are in an accountability situation, then you may need to check with an attorney..legal aid or a private attorney. Schools pay attention when attorneys speak. Public nor Private School Administrators do not appear to listen otherwise. If it is your first time investigating your child's educational options. Nothing against home schooling, there are educational standards and testing that must be met, but I believe that home schooled students lack some of the social growth necessary to function in real-world situations such as, male/female interaction, peer relations, and problem-solving as a group. We must learn to deal with different types of persons and those who don't necessarily share our same views to be sucessful in similar situations later in life.
I just asked a similar question about this 5 minutes or so ago, only it related to homeschooling with the primary method of instruction being the Internet. I have had friends that have been homeschooled and I've also had friends who have gone to public school as well as private school. Through talking with them and observing the way they approach the world, it seems that in general, people who have been homeschool have a better advantage. The homeschoolers that I have seen have some flexibility to do their schoolwork. For example, the homeschooler could start studies at 8:00 am and be done by 12:00 or 1:00, whereas public school is usually not over until 3:00 or so. This gives them more time in their day. I think one of the reasons why homeschoolers are able to progress is because they are learning at their own pace. If the homeschooler is an advanced student, they don't have to waste time hearing the other questions that slower students ask. How many times have you been in a classroom where teachers have gone on for minutes and minutes about a topic that you have already mastered? I'm sure that many of us have been in that situation and we would rather be doing something else. When someone is homeschooled, I think they they need to have a well rounded education, but there are so many opportunities available for this and there is no excuse why homeschoolers cannot experience the same kind of education that people in public education do. There are sports teams in the communities-soccer, baseball, softball, that aren't even affiliated with the school district. Homeschoolers can take music lessons of some type. Homeschoolers can take dance and participate in community activities. It depends mostly on how much time the parents are willing to invest in the child while they are young. If parents who homeschool their child develop this habit while the child is young, there is no valid reason why the child cannot feel comfortable in participating in community activities. Parents can get their children to coordinate with other children who are homeschool and go on field trips together. Regarding giving more success in the "real" world, I think that we need to examine what the working world or real world requires of us. It seems that not enough students graduating from college have adequate skills in decision making and critical thinking skills. This all begins from the start of school. If you give students tests that give them choices, such as multiple choice tests, then they will make decisions by choices alone. But if you give students tests that involve requiring them to think critically about answers on their own, such as essay questions, you will develop studies who should be well prepared for life in the working world. They will learn to think for themselves and if they do not know an answer, they will learn how to utilize resources available to obtain the information that they need. Alot of the problem in public schools is that some students with very high potential are cheated because teachers constantly have to stop to address behavior problems for other students. With homeschooling, this can be eliminated for alot of bright students who deserve a fair opportunity to excel in their education. I don't know how much this could help you, but I hope that it has given you something to think about and elaborate on for your paper. Hopefully, others will provide excellent and thorough reasoning as well.

I just started homeschooling this year-my boys are 11 and 13. I wish I would have done it sooner. Homeschooling has come a long way from what people think it is. But, it's not for everyone. My kids were getting teased in public schools. My oldest went to the bathroom and was jumped on by 10 other kids of a differnt race. The teachers didn't do much because of the racial tension.(I'm white) Also, teachers can be shady. Unfortunatly, some could have bad intentions. Not all, most teachers are wonderful. But, let's face it-it's a crazy world. Also, my kids were having at least 3 to 4 hours homework everyday. They had no time to do chores, or just be a kid. They were learning too many cuss words, hearing violent music, and a 13 year old was pregnant at their school. Kids were actually coming to school with hickies on their necks. With homeschooling, I teach them what they should know. At school they don't teach them how to manage their credit report, balance a checkbook, cook, write a resume, etc. I teach them from books, but also every other day we have "life's lessons" to where I teach them things about life, marriage, and family that they need to know to survive. Our homeschool group has park day once a week to where the kids play with each other, and co-op classes where the parents get a break and other people teach your kids. I do go to church, but my curriculm is not entirely "religious". I do give them test and homework, just not 3 hours worth. I guess the biggest drawbacks I have found to homeschooling is that I had worked my whole marriage until now. So, the one income is hurting us-I like my spending money! And, being with my kids 24/7 gets stressful. I am kinda a recluse anyway, and love to be alone. So, my kids being there ALL THE TIME takes it toll. Other than that, I like homeschooling. It all depends on how you are teaching it as to weither or not your kids get socialized and how much effort you are putting into it.

Generally, I would go for public schooling. However, in some places (especially inner cities, won't mention any) the public schooling is SO BAD, that almost anything else would be better than this total waste of time. It all depends on how many disturbing idiots are in a typical class, only two reduces the benefits 25%, it goes up geometrically from there. Some significance attaches to the quality of the teacher and the quality of the curriculum. In some rare situations home schoolers may have the advantage over reasonably decent schools, but there are dangers from the missing social interaction and in other respects which I am too tired to think about and write here now.

Im an educator in a public school so I consider myself a capeable teacher, however, i would never choose to homeschool my child. The extra things they learn from being in school can never be made up, the ideas and htoughs of other people that they gain through group discussions are hard to recreate at home. THere is just so much more learning that takes place at school other than academics.
