What is your opinion of Waldorf Schools?

  • If you have an opinion please let me know what your experience with Waldorf schools is or if you haven't been involved with them....what have you heard?

  • Answer:

I'm 14 and I'm at one now and it's amazing. I've been through the state system until year 6 and then a private girl's school for a year but this is my favourite experience of school so far. I've been here for about a year and a half now. The students are more self-confident and friendly than any other group of people I've ever met and some of the most intelligent people my age I've come across. The teaching is good, they will teach you the right things at the right stage of development for you and you CANNOT (I've heard people say this a lot) pick when you want to do lessons and choose to opt out. There is a heavy emphasis on art in the curriculum in alll areas of work to aid learning. The teacher that you start with in class one goes with you all through the eight years of the lower school, until you're 14. Then you move on to the upper school where you do GCSEs like any normal school, but still closely following the Steiner/Waldorf curriculum. The Early years involve a lot of nature, they eat the eat grains to suit the days of the week, lots of handwork and no one learns to read until they're 6 or 7. The subject lessons in my year are Eurythmy, Drama, Games, Music, Lifeskills, Cookery, Pottery, Handwork (Which is mostly dressmaking this year), Art, Circle Dancing and German and French, as well as English and Maths and a Main Lesson every day where you work with humanities and sciences, maths and art in "blocks" that last a few weeks or sometimes months. In my experience, a Steiner (or "Waldorf" in America) school is a better option, and by focusing on all aspects of development produces adults better-equipped for life. I hope this helps...
