How to open a degree college?

How does a college degree make you smarter then people who couldn't get one?

  • Im 16 and Im thinking about college and people dropping out of school. Im not going to drop out of school but why does everybody say people that drop out will be able to do nothing with their lives and stuff, opposed to going to college and getting a degree? What exactly are you learning there? What if you choose something super easy to do and get a degree off of that, what Im saying is why does everybody need to spend thousands of dollars for a piece of paper to succeed, and if they don't get it its hard? I don't get it, but I still plan on going to college please tell me the answer! Iam just nervous when I go to college because I don't know a thing about chemistry or Geometry so Im a little frightened because I want to succeed and not be a guy who is like a dropout. Also, is college hard? Do you have to study allot? Is stuff hard to understand?

  • Answer:

College teaches you how to write well, read critically, think critically, and gives you the background in whatever field you're interested in. Want to study quantum physics? Not without calculus and intro physics. Want to be a journalist? Not without learning how to put together a coherent argument. Want to be a doctor? Not without learning anatomy. If you choose something 'super easy' to do, you don't need a degree to do that. Whether or not you'll find college difficult depends on how difficult your high school education was. Whether or not you have to study a lot depends on the subject you pick and your aptitude for it. Whether or not it's hard to understand depends on the same factors. Which is why some people succeed and others fail. It all depends on you.

A college degree is NOT a reflection of a person's intelligence. Jobs require people to have college degrees not because they represent intelligence, but because they represent motivation and dedication. If you want to get a GOOD job that pays GOOD money, get a college degree. College isn't as hard as high school. In college, you're treated like an adult. You aren't there to be babied, and you are taught exactly what you go there to learn- your major. Yes, there are more tests and research papers, but there isn't any such thing as "homework" that is due tomorrow or you get a 0. You're given more than enough time to do your assignments and papers. If you don't know what you want to be, and still don't when you go to college, get a degree in anything. Here's a short story. I'm going to compare two people for a job opening. Guess which one you'd think would get it. Job Example: Microsoft Client Account Manager Applicant #1 - Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration. Has been working for the company doing exceptionally well for 6 years. Applicant #2 - Master's Degree in Medieval Studies. Has been working for the company doing exceptionally well for 2 years. Common sense, right? Get the guy who seems more qualified for the job. Right? Wrong. Applicant #2 got the job. Even if you have a piece of paper in something completely irrelevant, you have a better chance than someone who has nothing more than a high school degree.

First off, if you want a job that is competitive a degree is usually necessary. A degree can help you earn a higher salary than you would with just a high school diploma. Also, keep in mind that you're often limited by the occupation you seek unless you have a degree. College is what you make of it. It can be challenging, but if you try it will pay off. It's not about being smart, it's about determination. Many people are knowledgeable and "smart" because of their extensive education. Think of all that you've learned in high school... if you were to continue with college you'd learn much more. I wouldn't say one should attend college to become smart, but instead to fulfill your future goals, such as earning the degree necessary for the occupation you desire. Many people drop out of college because they're lazy, they give up too easily, or they were not focused enough. College students tend to get caught up in social life rather than academic life. Prioritize your goals. What will be important ten years down the road, your frat brothers and all the parties you attended or your degree and occupation. I know it's difficult to resist temptation, but always keep your ultimate goal and mind. If you do that you can still have fun, be social and manage to succeed. Good luck!
