Animal Cruelty Investigator?

What do I need to major in to become an animal cruelty investigator?

  • like specific names? I know I need to major in criminal justice but I'm not sure what type of animal major to take. Should I see if I can take classes outside of school if my school doesn't offer the major? Thanks!

  • Answer:

Your criminal justice major will definitely do the trick. If you can take any informative animal related classes that will fit into your schedule, that's all the better. The best thing you can do is volunteer at a shelter that deals with cruelty cases so you can familiarize yourself with the telltale signs of animal abuse. If possible, volunteer your time to ride with the cruelty investigator/ humane officer. Most places have one officer to deal with all the calls & the extra set of hands & eyes would be very welcome. Many times these jobs are filled by people with no degree that started as kennel help & have worked their way up. They also pay very little. I was unarmed, relied on my wits & called for police backup as needed. It is not unusual in smaller or more rural counties for everything animal related to be handled by a part time warden. Best wishes & good luck!
