Can the school suspend me for dying my hair pink if there is no rule in the handbook?
-
I go to a public school in Indiana. I checked my handbook many times, and found nothing about hair dye anywhere. So I dyed my hair pink and went to school. The assistant principal told me that I was to have it dyed a "natural color" before coming to school the next day or I'd be suspended. I pointed out that there was no mention of a rule against hair dye in the handbook. He told me "If we had to put every single rule in the handbook then it'd be 700 pages long." So I had to buy another box of hair dye out of my own money and redye it that night. Over the summer I re-dyed my hair pink and want to go back to school with it dyed. If there is still no rule in the handbook, I intend to. Is it OK for him to suspend me because of it even if it isn't in the handbook? Also, my mom died of breast cancer and was part of the reason I chose to dye my hair pink. Plus, the school bought 12 pink basketball uniforms and 17 pink t-shirts for the cheerleaders to support cancer.

Answer:
If you weren't provided with any documentation stating this, it can not be enforced! You should have your parent or legal guardian contact all of his superiors and demand a copy of this "rule". If they still don't provide it and want to enforce it, find a lawyer. It's good that you're familiar with your code of conduct, I'm guessing your Assistant Principal didn't expect that.

First id like to say: AWSOME HAIRCOLOUR Okay, at my school, they say: no " extreme hairstyles" is your hairstyle fine, coz i think ur principal was just being a loser. IMO, if i did that and my principal said that, i'd listen to him. Pretty much its your choice and i wouldn't take a serious matter like your education into the hands of Yahoo Answers. My grandmother had breastcancer.

Sorry about your mom, but it's best to listen to what your teacher say. I'm not sure if they will suspend you but you're certainly gonna get some attention from a certain teacher again if you dye it pink. I am sure there are many other ways to show your support for breast cancer. Hope that helps :)

No he can't suspend you. theres no rule in the handbook. and its a public school. and no, you can still have it pink even if he told you face to face. its you're right, now if it was a rule then you would have to obey.

They cant control the color of your hair! ...i think A kid in my class died their hair blue and yellow for the last days of school.....(school colors)....but then again, I live in New Hampshire..

no, thats totally not fair! you should be fine. Nice choice of color too!
school principles/teacher suck! at my school they say you cannot wear a hood, but yet they let some girls wear shorts so short they could be underwear! and they have like 3 inches of cleavage but i cant wear a freaking hood? when i was in middle school they said you couldn't dye your hair an unnatural color because it distracts from the "learning process". and what, girls hanging the chest and butt out doesn't? sorry for my rant lol. unfortunately, you won't be able to change the schools mind. once they have there stupid little "rules" theres no changing them.
Wow,what a heartless prude. The assistant principal doesn't make the rules he is simply there as an administrative regulator of those rules. Your best bet is to find the people who make those rules and talk to them. There is a board of education for every school and they have the final say in what goes. If your school has a PTA(Parent Teacher AssociationI and it should)that would also be a good bet to get a definitive answer. Don't let him be your judge/jury/executioner on this matter. Fight the power.

Yes, the school can suspend you for any reason that they deem disruptive behavior. Sad, but true. Even jobs can make up the rules as they go along. They just put down "disruptive behavior" or "insubordination" and they cover all their bases. You can bring your case to the school board IF you ARE suspended, but it is a long process trying to get back into school.

not really, but if they have warned you already and you do it again then they have every right to suspend you. its fair enough if there was no rule, but if they have told you specifically to your face then you have to obey them
