Could someone give me some basic studying tips?
-
I had lived in a village in Bosnia until I finished my elementary schooling (which over here takes 8 years) before I came to Split for my secondary schooling (which, in comparison to your system, could be regarded as university schooling). Since I came here, it was difficult for me to start studying. When I lived in Bosnia, I wasnt required to study a lot to get good grades. But now that I am here I would like to start studying seriously, yet I would like to get some basic tips about it that I surely don't know. Answers to questions like: When should I study? What is the best time for studying? How long should I study a day? Should I study the most important subjects first, or vice-versa? Please, anything you can think of will be appreciated. Anything you think is vital for studying. Thanks in advance.

Answer:
The best tip is to study what interests you whenever possible. Your concentration will equal your passion. Relate the material to things you understand. Learning is a life long process- don't view it as individual tasks or they will become chores. To answer your specific questions... When: Break it up into shorter focused sessions. The time of day is almost irrelevant. Some will study at night when it's quite. I read with headphones/music- coffee shops, book stores- you have to find what works best for you. All subjects are important as they relate to each other but you might want to study the basics first but mix it up a little and reward yourself in between with something you like (e.g. your favorite magazine). Use highlight markers and make a document of the highlights for easy reference. ENGAGE ALL YOUR SENSES Read it, Write it, Record it, Speak it and Teach it! Listen to the highlight reel you recorded while in your car, while jogging or whenever but do it often. This will greatly reinforce and accelerate your learning. Surround yourself with other bright people who are learning and are professional. Join groups (see yahoogroups) Interact and chat in forums- helping and teaching others will reinforce what you know. Also, be healthy. A sound body will make for a stronger mind which can learn and process information better. An early morning walk/run can do wonders for your energy. There are also foods that you can eat for memory. It is all connected. If you want to grow a plant, create a healthy, nurturing environment, fill it with quality material, water lightly but often and you'll usually get predictable and favorable results. The common laws apply to most things. Become infected with curiosity and have a thirst to learn. Above all, be proud of yourself that you are smart enough to seek answers (someday you will be the teacher) and that you care and respect yourself enough to want to be educated! CHEERS! David

I suggest that when you read something, copy the parts you think you might need to remember. The best time to study is not the same for everybody. I couldn't study the same thing for more than two hours or I would forget everything. Also after you read something, make up questions about what you read and write them down, then read again to try to remember things.
