How long's a piece of string?

  • Is it just me? but often when I ask someone a question they don't answer it, but reply with "how long's a piece of string" I'd like to know the answer so the next time I get asked I can tell the smart alexs exactly how long it is. Please reply in feet and inches as I don't understand them modern measurements. thank you

    People usually say that when they dont no the answer to the question you just asked them.... eg. kid says wen is dinner gonna be redy? you say how longs a piece of string... Keep a short peice of string in your pocket & next time someone says that you pull it out & say this long!!!!!! Or just open your arms out if you dont happen to have any string!!! Try it, it wil really annoy some people if you have some string!!!!!lol have fun getting your own back!!! Alternatively say its the same length as a long weight......... (wait!)

metric, as opposed to imperial you mean, 585.76 cm to be precise. you can convert it to imperial: 1 centimetre = 0.393700787 inches

A "piece of string" is just a common sense consideration that's left up to you to decide. It can be a foot long or five feet long as it depends upon the application to which it is being applied.
