What is censorship?

What are some reasons why censorship in schools is wrong?

  • There are many books out there that have been banned from schools because people feel they may be inappropriate for children and teens. Many people feel this kind of censorship is wrong because it limits the kids education. One book that's banned in many schools is "Adventures of Huckleberry Finn". I'm writing a paper, and need more reasons why censorship is wrong. Thanks

  • Answer:

-- Because if you censor books or ideas then the students never learn to judge for themselves what they think about such material. -- Because what we are talking about are IDEAS, abstractions, not actual physical things. Students cannot be injured by entertaining new ideas or thinking about others' ways of viewing the world. -- Because censorship imposes the world view of the person doing the censoring. If I am allowed to censor what students see, they only learn what I think is appropriate, and there are ideas and principles they will not be exposed to. The students get only a partial view of what exists in the world of knowledge. -- Censorship is arrogant because it assumes that the person setting the rules knows better than the persons upon whom the rules are imposed. It is a sort of "my way or the highway" approach to education.
