What is a provisional public school?

What is Public High School like?

  • I have been to public school before, but it was back in 3rd grade. So I don't remember much about it, besides the crayon fights(whooo crayons!!!xD) Well I have been going to a private school since 4th grade... I'm kind of a shy person, and I don't usually talk unless someone talks to me first xD... Or unless i'm with my friends! Oh! and next year I will be a freshman. My best friend and I were deciding to switch to public school because we don't really like our school.. Anyway, My questions are: 1. Are the academics behind in public school? 2. Do people judge you for the way you dress? (I usually wear all black, skinnies, converse, but i'm not emo or anything -__-) 3. I heard you change classes every semester is that true? xD (at my school we change every year sometimes towards the end of the year we will have health instead of science, literature instead of art... etc) 4. Are the teachers any different? (Do they teach well?) 5. Anything else for me & my friend to know? (: Thank you!

  • Answer:

    1. Nope! This depends on the school of course. For example, if you were going to some preppy boarding school and were paying tons and tons of dollars each year because you were some kind of crazy genius, then in that case, yes, public school would be behind. However, the majority of the time (if you went to a Catholic school or something) the academics at public schools are better than those at private schools due to a wider range of classes, people, and teachers. The core curriculum is essentially the same, but generally the opportunities at a public school are greater in number. 2. Yes. As other people answered, people will judge you on the way you dress. They will judge you on anything they can. However, it's really not as bad as everyone makes it out to be. You will find your own group of people and if you hang out with the right ones, then you will find high school to be a pretty good experience. 3. Yes. For elective courses, you will probably switch every semester, depending on the class. The main courses will most likely be throughout the entire year. 4. It depends. All teachers are different. Chances are that you will have really amazing teachers who teach classes that you wish you could have all through high school because they were just that frigging awesome, and you will have ones that totally suck. The teachers know what they are doing, but sometimes you just might not get them. This is pretty much true for all teachers. 5. High school is going to be an awesome time if you make good decisions (don't become a druggie or a ho or whatever... xD) and balance your time wisely between your social life and education. I personally think that public school prepares you better than private school because it is such a different experience. Stay out of stupid drama (it will be there) and just stay true to yourself. Good luck! xD

I went to two public high schools, so my answer will include experiences from each high school. These schools were in similar neighborhoods, but were very different. 1. Depending on the school, and the area of study, public schools can be behind in academics. I particularly noticed this in my math classes. Granted, I was not in the highest level math classes. That said, my math teachers were typically tenured teachers from other subjects, or coaches who needed to teach something in order to be employed with my schools. Then again, I was in honors English and Spanish. These classes were always challenging, and I did not feel like there was anything lacking. 2. Yes, people judge you because of the way you dress. When you're not wearing a uniform, it's easier to pick out differences between students. This helps form cliques, and unfortunately, this doesn't really change when you're out of school. I'm a big Converse fan myself. Even though I'm almost finished with college, people still scoff at me and call me emo. I don't even listen to emo music. 3. Yes and no. There's a certain core that most schools have you take throughout the year. My entire high school career consisted of taking classes in English, math, social studies (history, economics), gym class, and a science class. My first high school had you keep the same teacher every semester, my second high school had you change teachers even if you were taking the same class. I think it was their way of trying to get students to be comfortable with meeting new classmates regularly. 4. Teachers are teachers. I had plenty of fantastic teachers, many of whom I still talk to. I also had terrible teachers, many of whom I fantasized about murdering. Between all of those, there was a smattering of teachers who I couldn't possibly have cared less about if I tried. It wasn't that they weren't good, they just didn't impress me. 5. It's not really as different as everyone says it is.

1. Depends on what school you go to, teachers, classes, AP's, etc..there are varying opinions on this topic. Some private schools are more advanced, some public schools are. 2. No, although appearance matters. Does that make sense? 3. Depends on the school, last year I had AB schedule, which means basically we have a 90 day class every other day, and this year I have the same classes every day for 90 days, and then we switch to the 2nd semester. Right now I have my finals.. in January :( 4. Depends on the school, sorry. Teachers.. are teachers? They don't change that much I guess. Some are better than others, as at every school. 5. The biggest difference (as I switched from Private school to Public) is the uniform and dress code, along with the diversity of the students. It'll be fine, especially if you have a friend with you!

It's awful. Private schools since 3rd grade. Would LOVE to go back. (Freshman this year.) 1. Kind of, I feel like I'm repeating a bit, but they're OK if you're in Honors classes. 2. Not really. 3. yes every 1-2 semesters. Just changed semesters. It's terrible. 4. Most of them do, though if it's a big school, some will just see each student as another kid they have to teach. 5. I hate school. I was SO excited to go to high school, like it was crazy I was looking forward for summer to end. Now I'm just counting down the days (94.)

1. No. (stupid question) 2. It depends on what kind of school you go to. Some schools have clicks and some schools don't. 3. Some classes are for the whole school year, some classes aren't. 4. Of course they teach well, they're teachers. Duh. 5. ummmm, public schools aren't terrible, incompetent or lack fine teachers. If you keep acting like they are, well trust me, you won't be well liked. good luck.

1 YES 2 yES 3 and no it depends on what school your in ( mines does) 4 It depends on what type of teacher is given to you but some are great 5 Public school has a lot of people and some may like you and some may not so you have to deal with it . Also they fight but everywhere you go there will always be people that like u or hate u

1. No. 2. Yes they doo. 3. Yes that is true. 4. Teachers stink at public school. 5. If you go to public school, you will get judged, pulled into drama, and you will probably complain all the time. Public school is horrible, don't go. You'll end up as some hoe drug addict.

1) It depends. A lot of public schools have great gifted programs if you can get into them. I am at a public school studying in the IB program, and it's way harder than private school ever was for me. 2) No. The styles are so eclectic. I wear "preppy" things, but I see all kinds of styles. Designer, dark clothing, sweatpants. You'll see a lot of everything! 3) It depends on your schedule . . . Usually not. 4) It all depends on the school. 5) Before you do it, SHADOW THERE FOR A DAY. If you don't, you won't be knowing what you're getting into. You'll be making a decision based on opinions over the internet. Go and see for yourself! Good luck.
