What is the USA equivilant of a UK 'College', terminologically speaking?
-
I notice that when Americans talk about "college" they seem to mean University-level education, i.e. "College Degrees", whereas here in England, most use of the term 'College' refers to Further Education and Sixth Form Colleges - which don't grant degrees/degree-level qualifications unless they're partnering with a big University. A Sixth Form College is basically a 2/3 year college between high school and University where kids aged 16-19 take A levels, International Baccalaureate and other academic qualifications that are required to get into University. A Further Education College here is basically a college that caters to all ages and offers various types of qualifications, including practical/vocational ones, and apprenticeships for plumbing and engineering, and sometimes they offer academic qualifications too, so you can go to University after.

Answer:
We have high school until grade 12 (around 18 years old). During high school you can take "advanced placement" courses (more often called AP courses), which look good on college (university) applications and help your chances of getting it, but still do not get you any further to your college degree. During high school you can also take college level courses through some colleges or community colleges which you can apply towards meeting the requirements of your college degree. We have "Junior" or "Community" colleges here, which seem to play a similar role to further education colleges in the UK. You can become an electrician, or you can just take regular courses, earn a two year degree (associates degree) and then transfer to a college (univeristy) to get your four year degree (bachelors).
