How important are gcse grades when applying to good universities?

Do Universities look at GCSE grades? If so, how important are they?

  • Okay, so I'm currently in year 11, and at my school a lot of pressure is put on us to get As and A*s. We've been told that our GCSEs are really important, and will be needed throughout our whole life; I was wondering, is this true? I know you learn useful skills from particular GCSEs, and you need them to study A levels, but are they used much after that? Will a University take them into account when applying?

  • Answer:

I went to a school with a very similar ethos. When i started university they requested to see both my GCSE and A-level results because of the nature of the course I am doing (Primary school teaching) However, most courses don't really ask to see your GCSE results, you just have to list them when you apply. Saying that, it is definitely still important to try hard in your GCSEs. You never know when they will come in useful and it's always good to have as many good grades behind you in your future life. Sometimes, if a uni is trying to decide between you and somebody with the same A-level results as you, they will look at your GCSEs to help them decide. Good luck!

many degrees require you to have 5 good GCSE's and as there is no guarantee that you will go to Uni the best thing to do is achieve the best you can at every level of your studies. Yr11, should you not be concerntrating in class right now lol

yes, and they usually pick the best for likes of Medicine etc, if you have A*-C that is the bench mark really, and you do well in your Alevels then you should be fine, different grades have different ucas points for entry to university

They're not that important. Obviously getting 5 or more a-cs is important and having good ish gcses to back up your a levels is important I guess but they are no where near as important as a levels and not many universities care about them or take them into much consideration. Even Cambridge ignores them pretty much unless you did especially awfully. Basically it's important that you get a basic minimum and generally good looking grades to support your A levels but are not that important for university if you have good a level grades. They are more important as foundations to a level studies as there is a big step up and only getting a b or c in a subject might mean you struggle to get a C at a level initially!

GCSEs are not as important as A levels but they are important. They will be looked at throughout your life, College, Uni. Even if you're applying for a job and you've had 20 years work experience, your GCSEs will still have to be put on your GCSEs which your employers will look at and take into account. My teacher said her friend had missed out on a job because of one of her GCSE grades that was needed was not a C and above.
