Origin of the ship S.S.Berengaria?

Why does the captain go down with his/her ship?

  • Ok I just had a kinda argument with my brother about captains going down with the ship. (Silly i know but brothers huh?) Anyway i said that it's not a law but the captain must stay on the ship until everyone is safe and if he does go down with it then its for honor. He said that it is a law if the boat goes down then so does the captain. So who is right just to clear this up for us? Also could you please add as much detail on this as i'm quite interested anyway. Could you please find the origin of this please and as much things about it as possible. I basically want to know who made this up there name and if he went for a poo on that day i want to know about it! haha Also what if someone dies AS the boat is going down then does the captain have to stay? I just don't get why anybody would want to be a captain even in the WWI and II boats went down every day they must of had a lot of spare captains lying around.

  • Answer:

You're right and he's wrong. Sorry, I don't know the origin, and probably no one knows who first came up with it; it's a very old idea. LOL, as you've said, they have to make sure everyone else got off safely (if someone is dead, then they're dead and can't be saved, so the captain can leave).

The idea probably is from the Titanic. The captain was responsible for the Titanic crashing into the iceberg and sinking, so he stayed on the ship and died. Here is an article that gives some more information: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-16611371
