Should I apply for my GED?

In California would I meet the standards to apply for a GED?

  • I know that you have to be 18 to take your GED but I'm planning on taking my GED when I turn 17 soon. My father wants me to take his EMT program and work on the ambulance. I plan to be a paramedic and have been studying for it since I was very young. I do have a lot going on in my life. I have difficulty being in a high school environment. And I really just want to hurry and start early working. I know that on the website it says "a post-secondary educational institution or a prospective employer" is able to take the test at 17. Would my circumstances apply?

  • Answer:

If your father was a better advisor and if either of you know anything about becoming a Paramedic or EMT in California you wouldn't be asking this on Yahoo. Do you really want us to now believe your father teaches and is the "best Paramedic in the valley" after reading your question? In California, you must be 18 to take the EMT exam which is through the NREMT. Your father should know this. California regs. http://www.emsa.ca.gov/paramedic/default.asp NREMT http://www.nremt.org/ Read the requirements. https://www.nremt.org/nremt/about/reg_basic_history.asp#Entry_Requirements Very, very few if any ambulance companies will hire an 18 year old due to insurance reasons. So, you will not get the experience. With all of the lay offs of EMTs, don't expect to be hired as an 18 year old either. There are too many older (19, 20, 21 year olds) out there looking for work who would be a better candidate. Your father is just pulling your leg. He is also messing with you since the GED will limit your career options in the future. Literally he is setting you up to fail and figures you will only be an EMT earning minimum wage. If that is what you want, then go for it and have a nice time trying to find a job. If your father breaks the rules just for you, expect him to no longer be a Paramedic in any valley.

You will not be able to get a job as a paramedic at age 18 with only a GED. Sorry!
