How long does it take to be a pharmacy technician through online courses?

  • i live in NJ and the state requires to register with the board and "The Career Step training program is designed to prepare graduates to work in a pharmacy and pass the PTCB exam, which will improve job opportunities and prepare graduates for any future legislation changes" <-- i found this in their website. i dont know what it means? someone wanna explain me this ! and the requirements and the courses that needed to take.

    Hey! I love Career Step and I know a lot about their courses (I have worked with them for over 6 years). Anyway, what they mean is that they designed their pharmacy technician course to help grads prepare for the PTCB certification exam. Currently NJ only requires you to register with the State Board of Pharmacy in order to legally work as a pharmacy technician in that state. However if New Jersey decides to add new legal requirements, you will have some background behind you (training and PTCB certification if you decide to take the exam) which may meet the new requirements set by your state. I wouldn't worry about that actually happening though. As far as time it takes to complete their course, The Career Step Pharmacy Technician training program is 285 completion hours. Since the program is completely self-paced and the online training format allows you the flexibility to study as much or as little as your schedule allows, the time it takes you to complete the course will vary from other students. Some students are able to complete their training program in as little as two or three months (working on the course full-time, 8 hours a day 5 days a week) and others, who are more limited in the time they can devote to the course, take longer (for example, students who can devote about 15 hours a week may finish in about 5 months). Future legislative changes just means that in the event New Jersey makes it a requirement that all Pharmacy techs be PTCB certified, Career Step's program prepares you to take the exam. On their website, Career Step states their online training can be completed in 3 months studying full time (40 hours/week). The program consists of 285 hours of instruction. They do give you access to the material for 6 months so you can study at your own pace. They apparently offer an externship at CVS and Walgreens but that is subject to availability in your local area. Frankly for $1895 I would want a guarantee that I would receive an externship, otherwise it would be less expensive to just buy a couple of good pharmacy technician textbooks and study on your own to take the PTCB certification exam. Before I took the exam I studied for 2-3 hours a day for about 3 months and was able to pass the exam. Lots of people do! Check out The Pharmacy Technician (2nd or 3rd edition) and the workbook that goes with it. Also get the math calculations textbook. Even better since many techs in New Jersey have probably received their training on-the-job, apply at CVS and/or Walgreens as a clerk. Let the manager know you want to work in the Pharmacy. Just be persistent and check in with them every week, so they know you're really interested. In the mean time buy those books and start studying. Hope that helps and good luck to you.
